Scent Classes
Scent Work is a popular and fast growing dog sport. Whether you want your dog to find your keys, or are considering entering competitions (did you know your dog can earn a scent title!), the benefits (and fun) are endless.
In our Introduction to Scent Work class, dogs will learn to search for an ANKC competition odour (birch). Alternatively, you can bring your own small object (eg car keys, wallet, mobile phone). Once you have the learning principles in place you can teach your dog to find anything!
Learn about odour, how dogs smell and see the world differently to humans.
Suitable for dogs of all ages, breeds and sizes.
Dogs are worked one at a time (must be OK to wait in your vehicle or crate when not working) to give them the best opportunity to focus and succeed. This also allows time to rest in between turns - scent work is tiring!
Suitable for anxious/nervous/exuberant dogs - scent work is a wonderful outlet and activity for dogs not suited to group training classes.
Build confidence, reduce anxiety, provide a physical and mental outlet, a great activity for all dogs!
Interior, exterior and object/container searches as the class progresses (weather permitting).
If using birch, you’ll be provided with an initial supply of odour so you can practice at home.
Scent Work
We don’t need to teach our dogs how to smell, they already see their world through scent. We build on a dog’s natural desire and ability to hunt, teach an association with a particular odour and an indication to the handler when they find it!
